From the west coast of the U.S. to across the pond in the U.K., Unum employees came together to fight hunger in the communities they call home. More than 37,500 pounds of food and more than $82,000 was collected during the company’s annual Cash and Cans food drive.
That’s enough to provide more than 445,000 meals to those in need.
Steve Alpren, the leader of this year’s drive and a community relations specialist in Unum’s Portland office, was excited to tally the results “Days like this are why I have been an employee of this company for 25 years – our employees are amazing,” he said.
The need is significant and affects people from all walks of life. According to Feeding America, its network of food banks provides service to 46.5 million people in need across the U.S., including 12 million children and 7 million seniors. In the U.K., more than 8 million people live in households that struggle to put enough food on the table.
Each month, thousands of our most vulnerable neighbors turn to the local organizations that the Unum drive supports, including Preble Street, Baton Rouge Food Bank, Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine, Chattanooga Community Kitchen, Worcester County Food Bank, Glendale Salvation Army, Basingstoke Foodbank, and Harvest Hope Food Bank.
“As the first step in changing lives, a meal is absolutely critical,” said Jens Christensen, Chief Executive Officer of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. “Not only do Unum employees donate food for the meals, they even take time to help prepare and serve meals, while also volunteering in many of the programs we offer that help men, women and children escape homelessness and start again.”
Last year, Good Shepherd Food Bank distributed more than 19 million meals to more than 178,000 Mainers in need through its network of local partner agencies. Becky Wright, director of development for Good Shepherd, was delighted with the outpouring of support from Unum. “Taken together the food and cash donations will be the equivalent of 25,000 meals for our neighbors in need,” she said.
“This is such a great example of who we are as a company,” Alpren said. “Not only do our employees give generously, but they are also very creative in their approach to the drive. It’s fun to watch every year and this was no exception.”
You can get involved, too. Every dollar donated to Feeding America helps its network of food banks secure and distribute 11 meals to people facing hunger. To donate or to find your local food bank, visit Feeding America today.
