Partner Profile: Public Education Foundation
Location: Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mission: The Public Education Foundation’s (PEF) mission is to improve student achievement in public schools through highly effective teaching, strong leadership, and strategic partnerships so that children succeed in learning and in life.
How does Unum support the Public Education Foundation? “Unum and PEF have developed a strong partnership over years of working together,” said Emily O’Donnell, PEF’s vice president for external relations. “Unum supports two important areas of PEF’s work- the Leadership Pipeline and the STEM Innovation Hub. The Leadership Pipeline trains great educators to advance their leadership so that we have great teacher-leaders, assistant principals, and principals. The STEM Innovation Hub is a regional resource that provides teachers with materials for STEM education and a wide range of professional development.”
In addition to providing financial support for these programs, O’Donnell stated that Unum also provides human capital. Unum employees sit on PEF’s Leadership Fellows selection committee, serve as mentors to school administrators in the Principal Leadership Academy, and present a workshop on Organizational Culture to assistant principals. And Unum’s Young Professionals have volunteered at STEM Night, and they have participated in PEF’s teacher job shadow program.
What impact has Unum’s support had on the Public Education Foundation? “Unum is more than a funder, they are a community partner that sets the bar for corporate responsibility in Chattanooga,” O’Donnell said. “Unum’s investment of resources and participation in our work increases our ability to provide excellent programs to our public schools.”
Why does Unum support Public Education Foundation? “The focus of the work PEF does in our community aligns with Unum’s education strategy of supporting students and educators,” said Suzanne Payne, director of corporate social responsibility. “PEF is a catalyst to bring business, education and community partners together to strengthen our public schools, and we appreciate the partnership we’ve had with them for more than a decade.”
