At Unum, we’re dedicated to building and nurturing an inclusive workplace – one that embraces differences, fosters collaboration and encourages employees to bring their best ideas to work every day. To celebrate this commitment, we are excited to announce that Unum was recently named one America’s Best Employers for Diversity by Forbes.
“Across the enterprise, we have worked hard this past year to get closer to becoming the most inclusive and diverse company in our industry,” said Wade Hinton, vice president of Inclusion & Diversity. “While being included on this list is confirmation that we’re moving in the right direction, we know this is a journey and it will take all of us to continue to make progress.”
The ranking is determined by an independent survey from a sample of 60,000 U.S. employees who work for businesses with at least 1,000 employees. Companies included in the list received the most recommendations, boast the most diverse boards and executive ranks, and have the most proactive diversity and inclusion initiatives.
2019 Inclusion & Diversity Highlights
Our culture of inclusion continues to stand out in the employee benefits market. Last year, we worked to create safe spaces where employees could talk openly about diversity and use their power to include. Initiatives like Gratefull@Unum and showcasing diverse holiday traditions to let employees learn more about their colleagues were two ways we did this.
We also expanded our efforts to the community through the Check Your Blind Spots Mobile Tour and developed partnerships with diverse organizations in our communities.
And while our commitment to inclusion starts at the top, more than 1,000 passionate and uniquely equipped members of our employee resource groups (ERGs) were an integral part in driving this work forward. Our five ERGs helped shape Unum’s culture by partnering on initiatives ranging from mentoring and on-boarding to design thinking and ally training. These groups developed programming, planned awareness and educational events, and brought innovative ideas to life across our company.
Another focus area was – and still is – attracting, retaining and advancing a diverse workforce.
Through the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Innovation Challenge, we hosted 30 students from HBCU’s across the country to solve real-world industry challenges while introducing them to career opportunities at Unum.
Through our Champions Program, our leaders participated in training and programs to become inclusion champions. Their willingness to go a step beyond their day-to-day duties and become immersed in inclusion best practices is one more reason we’re on track to becoming the most inclusive and diverse company in the employee benefits market.
