Partner Profile: The Hanover Theatre
Location: Worcester, Massachusetts
Mission: To foster a love and appreciation for the performing arts in audiences of today and tomorrow.
How are you making performance arts available to more youth in the community? “The theatre’s most impactful community initiative is the Adopt-a-School program, which partners with South High Community School in Worcester,” said Nel Lazour, director of development for the theatre. “The program integrates a Broadway production into the school curriculum and provides tickets to the entire student body (nearly 1,300 students) to see the production at the theatre.”
Lazour stated that this program has been so successful that it is now part of South High’s culture, with this year’s graduating class having experienced four years of learning and enrichment with an annual Broadway show.
Additionally, The Hanover Theatre has a full-time education department that supports and provides a number of community and outreach programs through its Access to the Arts Fund.
How does Unum support The Hanover Theatre? “Unum has been a tremendous support over the years, beginning with leadership support for the first capital campaign in 2008 that allowed us to restore and open the doors of our historic 2,300 seat performing arts venue,” Lazour said.
Additionally, Unum has continued its support of the Adopt-A-School program and partnered with the theatre to provide funding for underserved students to experience the joys and enrichment that attending live theatre performances provides. Lazour also stated that Unum was a lead supporter of the Securing the Future Capital Campaign, recently supported the Theatre District Capital Campaign as well as the opening of theatre’s new Conservatory for the Performing Arts.
What impact has that support had on the theatre? “The impact of Unum’s support is significant,” said Lazour. “As a major donor for each of our capital campaigns, as well as the Student’s Critic Program and the Adopt-a-School program, Unum has been instrumental in our ability to grow and serve more than 197,000 patrons and over 15,000 students annually, as well as play a pivotal role in the revitalization of Worcester’s downtown core.”
Why does Unum support The Hanover Theatre? “The Hanover Theatre has been a great partner to provide cultural enrichment opportunities for the students of Worcester public schools that Unum supports,” said Leah MacLeod, community relations specialist at Unum. “They are open to ideas, and innovative in the way they deliver art education to youth of many backgrounds, age groups and interests who have been underserved in the past.”
