Employee Spotlight: How Liisa Shultz supports United Way

Liisa Shultz, lead policies & procedures consultant for IDI Business Operations, has been with Unum in Worcester for almost 17 years.

Here, in a Q&A with WorkWell, she shares how she supports the United Way of Central Massachusetts by paying it forward to the community who helped her grow up.

WorkWell: How are you involved with the United Way and why?

Shultz: I’m a part of Unum’s United Way Campaign Committee. Helping plan campus events while knowing that every dollar raised is supporting local programs and people in need is very fulfilling to me.  Every day, I’m grateful for the blessings in my life, and it’s only fair to try to pay it forward as best I can.

WorkWell: What have you experienced by working with the United Way that has inspired you?

Shultz: For many years, my mom worked for Community Healthlink, one of the United Way partner agencies.  Seeing her help those in need with food, crisis intervention, education and job training was an inspiration. It inspired me to not only treat everyone with respect and compassion but try to help others.

WorkWell: How long have you been a part of the United Way committee and what has your role been?

Shultz: This is my second year being a member of the United Way Committee. I enjoy chairing events and seeing our hard work come to fruition with raising the funding needed for local programs and services. It’s great to be a part of a team that’s working toward a common goal.

WorkWell: Why is it important to you?

Shultz: It’s important to give back to the community.  I grew up in Worcester, and I feel a moral responsibility to help the city that supported me growing up.

WorkWell: What does Unum’s support of United Way mean to you?

Shultz: Being a full-time working mom who helps with my son’s school and extracurricular activities means my time to volunteer is limited. It’s great that I can volunteer my time as part of the United Way Committee and know that Unum whole-heartedly promotes giving back to the community so they have my back in full support of my volunteering efforts.

WorkWell: Why should Unum employees support the United Way?

Shultz: It’s a chance to be the voice of Unum and help support the community.  So many of us live and work in central Massachusetts and supporting the United Way only helps us all thrive – it takes a village you know!
