In their own words: Velvet Hernandez-Johnson brings people together through art

From museums to music, access to arts and culture sparks creativity, fires imaginations, enriches diversity and brings communities to life. Velvet Hernandez-Johnson, a manager in client services in Unum’s Chattanooga, Tenn., location, shares how getting involved in her local art scene helps her bond with colleagues and connect with people of diverse backgrounds.

“Volunteering has always been part of my life, especially when it comes to causes involving women, children and the arts.

Through Unum’s involvement with the local arts, I have had the chance to serve on an outreach committee for the Hunter Museum of American Art. We focused on broadening the museum’s connection with our community, so I created a monthly lunch program to help employees take advantage of the free membership Unum provides. Every other month, around 50 employees participate in a private tour of the museum with a curator. More than an educational way to spend a lunch hour, it’s a chance to find common ground through new perspectives and to foster creativity and innovation through shared interests.

I also represent Unum on the board of the Creative Discovery Museum, a local children’s museum with educational outreach initiatives that align with our focus on linking arts and education.

Unum’s commitment to giving back means I’ve been able to integrate community service into my career from the first day I joined the company.

As a bilingual employee, I’m also able to connect with people of diverse backgrounds, both within Unum and through our community outreach. I grew up in Guatemala City, so having the chance to use Spanish, my native language, to reach out to the Latino community has really enriched my life personally, as well as professionally. It feels good to help foster diversity within our company and to serve as a role model for community members and new employees. I love the fact that it’s not just about going to work every day — it’s about going to work to help others.”

Unum has long been a supporter of arts and culture organizations in the communities our employees call home, especially when there’s an opportunity to help connect arts and education. View Unum’s complete 2015 Corporate Responsibility Report or go online to learn more.
